Modern|Mythic Writing
When somebody suggested I come up with a “tag” for what I write I thought… how on earth can you encapsulate hundreds of thousands of words in a single phrase? Well, it’s done all the time, and it’s called a genre. I know that I write urban fantasy, so my phrase should be reflective of that. But what spiral on fantastic creatures in an urban setting does JC Garren take?
Modern: Urban fantasy that is not only set in modern times, but deals with real modern issues in relationships, faith, sex, and personal power and responsibility.
Myth: “Creatures of night come to light!” (name that quote
) Stories of legendary heroes, monsters, and magic that comment on the values and culture of a people.
As a practicing pagan, I know that the power of a story is less in its literal truth and more in the truth at its heart. Can the audience identify with the characters? Even in a fantastic situation, can the audience believe? Do the ethics of the story have something worthy to say? Most importantly, is the story entertaining enough that somebody wants to spend time with it?
As I start on my quest for a writing career, I’ll appreciate all the luck any cyber-folk send my way, and I wish you equal blessings on your journeys, whatever they be.
